For this year’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day, (more at #ReadYourWorld), I was given the pleasure of reviewing, “Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas” written by Natasha Yim and illustrated by Grace Zong. From the very first page, Ms. Yim’s words will have you smiling and Ms. Zong’s pictures will bring your smile to a chuckle or even a full laugh.
This exceedingly clever adaptation of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” begins with the introduction of Goldy Luck, a sweet, endearing, and somewhat clumsy young girl, who according to her mother is “lucky” enough to be born into the Year of the Golden Dragon….known as a very lucky year. However, following a delightful cultural parody of the traditional story’s sequence of events, we see that Goldy doesn’t feel so lucky. Hidden in nearly every sentence and picture are fantastic tidbits not only about the upcoming celebration of Chinese New Years (beginning February 16, 2018), but also Chinese culture in general.
I cannot recommend this book enough to teachers, librarians, caregivers, and parents wishing to share a timeless story of thoughtfulness with the children in their lives. While absolutely a go-to book for Chinese New Years and Chinese culture, “Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas” lends itself to lessons in kindness, self-reflection, friendship, and much, much more.
Chinese New Year 2018 is just around the corner beginning on February 16, 2018 with preparations beginning February 8th so be sure to get your copy soon! Great thanks to Ms. Yim, Ms. Zong, and Charlesbridge for bringing this delightful adaptation to the world.
Happy Reading, everyone, and Kung Hei Fat Choi!
